DIFFUSERS:

The easiest and most effective way to fragrance a room is with a room diffuser. Unlike candles or potpourri, diffusers allow you to change the scent of a room by simply adding a different essential oil.

Many synthetic fragrance oils are sold in stores to be used in diffusers. There are many benefits to using pure essential oils rather than fragrance oils to scent your home or office. Most importantly, fragrance oils do not provide the therapeutic effects achieved with true essential oils. Inhaling the vapors of an essential oil has a direct effect on a regulatory part of the brain which governs emotions, energy, sexual response, memories and hunger. Essential oils have a proven chemical effect on the brain, whereas fragrance oils have been synthetically manufactured simply to "smell good."

There are many various types of room diffusers, varying in price, style and effectiveness.

Candle Diffuser:
This is by far the most popular and widely known type of diffuser used. Its simplicity makes it easy to use, and it is extremely effective and economical.

Using a candle diffuser is easy: simply fill the dish 3/4 full with plain water, add chosen essential oil(s) to the water, then light the candle underneath. As the water heats up, the molecules of the essential oil will vaporize, dispersing their fragrance and healing properties into the air. Auroma supplies many different styles of candle diffusers: ceramic, metal and glass, but their basic function is the same.

Electric Diffuser:
These are used in the same way as a candle diffuser, except a light bulb is used in place of a candle as a source of heat. Electric diffusers are a good choice for someone who is concerned about the safety of a lit candle because of pets or children. The only drawback is that the light bulb does not give off as much heat as a candle flame, so the fragrance will not be as strong. Electric diffusers are also excellent for an office or bathroom, since they would be quite effective in scenting smaller areas.

Fan Diffuser:
These are actually small fans which include filter pads to which a few drops of essential oil are added and then placed into the fan. Rather than using heat, these fans essentially "blow" the scent into the air. Fan diffusers are very easy to use, but they are not effective in scenting very large areas. They would be particularly good for limited areas, such as a desk or bedside table.

OTHER METHODS:

Light bulb ring:
Auroma carries ceramic light bulb rings which fit around any standard light bulb. Simply add 6-8 drops of essential oil to the ring, then turn on the light. The heat from the bulb will vaporize the scent of the oil into the air. Light bulb rings are most effective for smaller areas, such as on a desk, bedside table, or next to a chair. The light bulb rings come in sapphire and teal colors.

Clay Pot: The porous material of these decorative clay pots allows the scent of the essential oil to slowly be released over the period of a few days to a week, depending on the amount of oil added. These pots come on a small string, perfect for hanging from a car rearview mirror, next to the bed, or anywhere you want a subtle fragrance in the air. Auroma's clay pots come in white with sapphire trim, or natural terra cotta. Click here - to learn more.

At the moment we enter the world, our first encounter is the act of breathing. Our first taste of life is experienced through that initial gasp of air filling our infant lungs, and in that instant, our sense of smell is born.

Every moment we are alive, we are breathing, and in every breath we take, we are using our sense of smell.

Scent can uplift our spirits, soothe our psyche, stimulate attraction and protect us from harm. Our brain takes only 0.5 seconds to respond to a scent, and our emotional reactions often take place beneath the level of our conscious awareness.

A fragrance wafting through the air or lingering on a pulse point can transport us to another time and place, recalling thoughts of distant lovers or carefree summer evenings. Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov once remarked, “Nothing revives the past so completely as smell.” Every memory has a scent, and every scent, a memory.

Each moment of our existence is encapsulated within the aroma we are experiencing, and few things have the power to influence our state of mind at any given time. Scent can enhance every corner of our lives in a way no other element has the capacity to do.

At the core of aromatherapy are essential oils, the true essence of plants and flowers. Each botanical influences the individual in a unique way, physically, emotionally and spiritually. In the same way that each person has a unique personality, each plant has a special character all its own that can affect our minds on multiple levels of body, mind and spirit.
